Mrs.Sonia Gandhi to explain before a Bihar Court about her depiction as “Goddess Durga”

In India, it has become a common practice of the followers of political parties and cinema fans to depict their political leaders and their favourite actors/actresses as some “Gods” and “Goddesses”, wounding the sentiments of the people of the concerned religion/s.A complaint against Mrs.Sonia Gandhi was lodged in the year 2007, in the ‘Additional District Sessions Court’ of Muzaffarpur, Bihar as detailed below:-

In the State of Uttar Pradesh, in the year 2007, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, the President of All India Congress Party, was depicted in posters by their partymen as “Goddess Durga”, a popular Hindu Goddess. Also, a photograph depicting Mrs.Gandhi as Goddess Durga had appeared in the Muzaffarpur edition of a Hindi daily on 21st June 2007. According to the complainant the above depictions of Mrs.Gandhi as a Hindu Goddess was an insult to the Hindu Religion.

The Bihar Court has summoned Mrs.Sonia Gandhi to appear before the court in person or through her lawyer on 29th July 2010, Thursday and explain her position in the matter.

A separate summons to:-

  • the Uttar Pradesh Congess Committee (UPCC) president Ms. Rita Bahuguna and
  • the party’s Muradabad district president

to appear before the court the same day in the case.

We will come to know from the court verdicts in such cases, upto what extent, the concerned political leaders/ cine-actors/actresses are responsible for such acts of depictions.
