The List of ‘Padma Awardees’ for every year are prepared by the ‘Indian Union Ministry of Home Affairs’ and approved by the President of India.
The ‘Approved List of Padma Awards’ for each year will be announced on the occasion of the ‘Republic Day of India’ (26th of Janaury) and the list will be published by the ‘Press Information Bureau’ of the ‘Ministry of Home Affairs’ of the Union Government of India.
For the year 2016, the List of ‘Padma Awardees’, Prepared by the Indian Union Ministry of Home Affairs and Approved by the President of India, Pranab Mukhrjee, and published by th ‘Press Information Bureau of India’, on 25th January 2016, on the eve of the India’s 67th Republic Day of India (26th January 2016).
For the year 2016 a list of a total number 112 personalities chosen for the ‘Padma Awardees-2016’ has been published and the 112 Padma Awards include the following:
- 10 ‘Padma Vibhushan’,
- 19 ‘Padma Bhushan’,
- 83 ‘Padma Shri’,
- 19 of the ‘Women Awardees’,
- 10 Foreigners / Non Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Orgin (PIOs)/ Oversees Citizens of India (OCIs), including 1 Posthumous Awardee and
- 4 Posthumous Awardees.
LIST OF 10 “PADMA VIBHUSHAN” Awardees-2016:
1. Ms. YAMINI KRISHNAMURTHI, a 75 years old-‘Bharat Natyam’ & ‘Kuchipudi’-Dancer of Delhi has been selected for the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Award – 2016, under : Art-Classical Dance.
Yamini had been conferred on with the ‘Padma Shri’ Award in the year 1968 and the ‘Padma Bhushan Award’ in the year 2001.
2. Mr. RAJINIKANTH, who was born as ‘Mr.Shivaji Rao Gaekwad’, of Karnataka, a 65 years old popular ‘Super-Star’ of Tamil Cinema, who has also acted in Hollywood, Bollywood and Bengali Movies has been selected for the ‘Padma Vibhushan Award’ 2016, under: Art- Cinema.
Rajinikanth had been conferred on with the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award in the year 2000.
3. Ms.GIRIJA DEVI, a 86 years old Classical Singer of West Bengal, known as the ‘Queen of Thumri’ Music has been selected for the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Award-2016, under: Art- Classical- Vocal.
Girija Devi had been conferred on with the ‘Padma Shri’-Award in the year 1972 and the ‘Padma Bhushan’-Award in the year 1989.
4. Mr.RAMOJI RAO, a 79 years old Indian Businessman, Film Producer, Journalist and a Media Person of Andhra Pradesh has been selected for the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Award-2016, under: Literture & Education- Journalism.
Ramoji Rao is the Founder and the Head of the ‘Ramoji Groups’, owning, the ‘Ramoji Film City’ in Hyderabad, the ‘Ushakiran Movies Production Company’, ‘The Margadarasi Chit Funds’, ‘Eenadu- Telugu Daily Newspaper, ‘ETV’, the Telugu TV Channes and the ‘Priya Foods’, etc.
5. Dr. Ms. VISWANATHAN SHANTA / Dr.V.Shanta , a 88 years old ‘Cancer Specialist’ of Tamil Nadu selected for the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Award-2016, under: Medicine- Oncology.
Dr.V.Shanta is the present Chair Person of the ‘Adyar Cancer Institute’, Chennai, established by Dr.Muthulakshmi Reddy in the year 1954.
6. Shri Shri RAVI SHANKAR, a 59 years old Indian Spiritual Guru of Karnataka has been selected for the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Award-2016, under: Others-Spiritualism.
ShriShri Ravi Shankar is the Founder & the Head of the ‘Art of Living’, a Non Governmental Organization / NGO at Bangalore, involved in many ‘Humanitarian Projects’ with special focus of ‘Stress Management’ by means of ‘Yoga’ and ‘Meditation’. ‘The Art of Living’ has been operating in many places of India and in 155 countries, globally, touching the lives of more than 37 Crores of people.
7. Mr.JAGMOHAN, a 88 years old Former Lt.Governor of Delhi / Goa, the Former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and the Former Vice President of the ‘Delhi Development Authority has been selected for the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Award-2016, under: Public Affairs.
8. Dr.VASUDEV KALKUNTE AATRE, a 76 years old Indian Scientist of Karnataka, who is the Former Head of the Indian ‘Defence Research and Development Organization’ / DRDO, succeeding Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kamalm, the Former President of India in that post has been selected for the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Award-2016, under: Science & Engineering.
Dr.V.K.Aatre had been conferred on with the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award in the year 2000.
9. Mr. AVINASH DIXIT, a 71 years old Indo American Economist, a ‘Non Resident Indian’ / NRI of the USA, who was born in Mumbai and who is holding many key positions in the USA in the Economic and Financial Fields and who is the author of many books in Economics has been selected for the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Award-2016, under : Literature & Education.
10. (Late) Mr. DHIRUBHAI AMBANI of Maharashtra, the Co-Founder of the ‘Reliance Groups’, one of India’s largest groups of companies, born on 28th December 1932 and expired on 6th July 2002 at the age of 69 years has been selected for the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Award-2016, To be awarded-Posthumously, under: Trade & Industry.

1. Mr. ANUPAM KHER, a 60 years old Bollywood Actor of Maharashtra, born in Punjab has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under: Art-Cinema.
Anupam Kher is the ‘Former Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification of India’ and the ‘Former Chairman of the Indian Nation School of Drama’ and the winner of ‘2 National Film Awards’/ ‘Special Jury Awards’.
2. Mr.UDIT NARAYAN JHA, a 60 years old ‘Nepalish Bollywood Playback Singer’ of Maharashtra has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under: Art-Playback Singing.
Udit Naryan had been conferred on with the ‘Padma Shri’ Award in the year 2009.
3. Mr.RAM V SUTAR, a 90 years old popular Indian Sculptor of Uttar Pradesh has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under: Art- Sculpture.
Ram V Sutar had been conferred on with the ‘Padma Shri’ Award in the year 1999.
4. Mr. HEISNAM KANHAILAL, a 75 years old popular Manipuri Stage Drama Director of Manipur has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under: Art- Theatre.
5. Mr. VINOD RAI, a 67 years old Former Indian Civil Servant / IAS Officer, a native of Uttar Pradesh, who had served in the State of Kerala has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under: Civil Service.
Vinod Rai is also the Former ‘Comptroller and Auditor General of India’ ./ ‘CAG’, preceding the present CAG of India-Mr.Shasikant Sharma.
6. Dr. YARLAGADDA LAKSHMI PRASAD, a Literate & Educationalist with 2 Ph.D.s (one in Hindi and another in Telugu), a popular Writer in Hindi & Telugu, a Professor of Hindi in the Andhra University and the Chairman of the A.P.Hindi Academy and a Former Rajya Sabha MP has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under: Literature & Education.
Dr.YLP had received the ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’ in the year 1992 and had been conferred on with the ‘Padma Shri’ Award in the year 2003.
7. Prof. N. S. RAMANUJA TATACHARYA, a popular ‘Sanskrit Scholar’ of Maharashtra, born in Tamil Nadu, has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under: Literature & Education.

Dr. BARJINDER SINGH HAMDARD, the son of the famous ‘Punjabi Journalist & Writer’ Sadhu Singh Hamdard of Punjab, who is also a Punjabi Journalist, the Managing Editor of the Punjabi Daily Newspaper- ‘Daily Ajit’ and who is a Former Rajya Sabha MP has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under: Literature & Education.
9. Prof. D. NAGESHWAR REDDY, a popular ‘Gastroenterologist’ of Hyderabad, Telengana, the Chairman of the ‘Asian Institute of Gastroenterology’ ,one of the the world’s largest ‘Gastroenterology Hospitals’ has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under: Medicine-Gastroenterology.
Prof.D.Nageshwar Reddy had been conferred on with the ‘Padma Shri’ Award in the year 2002.
10. Swamy TEJOMAYANANDA, a 65 years old ‘Indian Spiritual Guru’, with the Birth Name ‘Sudhakar Kaitwade’, the Head of the ‘Chinmaya Mission of Maharashtra’ has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’-2016, under: Others-Spiritualism.
11. Mr.HAFEEZ CONTRACTOR, a 65 years old ‘Indian Architect’ of Maharashtra, a Member of the ‘Bombay Heritage Committee’ and the ‘New Delhi Lutyens Bungalow Zone Review Committee’ has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under: Others- Architecture.
12. Mr. RAVINDRA CHANDRA BHARGAVA, of Uttar Pradesh, the Chairman of the Board’ at the ‘Maruti Suzuki India Ltd’ has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under: Public Affairs.
13. Dr. A. VENKATA RAMA RAO / Dr.A.V.RAMA RAO of Andhra Pradesh, a 80 years old Indian Inventor & Chemist, the Founder of the Non Governmental Organization . NGO- ‘A.V.Rama Rao Research and Doctoral Studies’ in Chemistry, the Founder of ‘Avra Labs’ and a ‘Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy’ has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under Science & Engineering.
Dr.A.V.Rama Rao had been conferred on with the ‘Padma Shri’ Award in the year 1991.
14. Ms. SAINA NEHWAL of Telengana, a 25 years old Indian Female Badminton Player, who had been Ranked as the Number One in Badminton for some time and who has become the First Indian to win an Olympic Medal in Badminton, a Bronze Medal Winner in the 2012 London Olympics, has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’-2016, under: Sports- Badminton.
Ms.Saina Nehwal had been conferred on with the ‘Arjuna Award’ in the year 2009, the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award’ for the years 2009-2010 and the ‘Padma Shri’ Award in the year 2010.

Ms. SANIA MIRZA of Telengana, a 29 years old ‘Indian Professional Female Tennis Player’, currently ‘Ranked No.1 in Women’s Doubles’ and who had been ‘Ranked as No.1’- in both the Women’s Singles & Doubles Female- Badminton, between the years 2003 and 2013, has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award -2016, under: Sports- Tennis.
Mr.Sania Mirza had been conferred on with the ‘Arjuna Award’ in the year 2004, the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award’ in 2015 and the ‘Padma Shri’ Award in the year 2006.

Ms.INDU JAIN of Delhi, a 79 years old Indian Business Woman, the Chair Person and the Chief Executive / CEO of India’s the largest Media Group the ‘Bennet Comeman & Co Ltd’ , owning the ‘Time of India’ and other larte Indian News Papers, has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under: Trade & Industry.
17. (Late ) Swami DAYANANDA SARASWATHI, a Religious Monk of the Hindu Monostic Order of Uttar Khand, born on 15th August 1930 and – expired on 23rd September 2015 at the age of 85 years, has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, To be Awarded Posthumously under: Others-Spiritualism.
(Late) Swamy Dayananda Saraswathi had been a renowned ‘Traditional Teacher of the Advaita Vedenta’ and the ‘Founder’ or the ‘Arsha Vidya Gurukulam’ and who had been the ‘Spiritual Guru’ of the present Prime Minister of India, Mr.Narendra Modi.
18. Mr.ROBERT BLACKWILL, a 76 years old Foreigner, of the USA, an American Diplomat, an Author, a Senior Fellow at the Council of Foreign Relations of the USA and a Former US Ambassador to India has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award-2016, under: Public Affairs.
19. Mr.PALLONJI SHAPOORJI MISTRY, a 86 years old, ‘Non Resident Indian’ (NRI ) / a ‘ Person of Indian Origin (PIO) / an Overseas Citizen of India (OCT), a ‘Resident of Ireland’ , who is a Parsi Zoroastrian by birth and who gave up his Indian Citizenship and obtained an Irish Citizenship in the year 2003 has been selected for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ Award -2016, under: Trade & Industry.
Mr.Pallonji Shapoorji Mistry, a ‘Construction Tycoon’ and a successful ‘Business Man’, is the Chairman of the ‘Shapoorji Pallonji Groups’ , owning the ‘Shappoorji Pallonji Construction Limited’, the ‘Forebes Textiles’ and the ‘Eureka Forbes Limited’, and the Former Chairman of the ‘Associated Cement Companies’ and he is the ‘Single Largest Share Holder’ of India’s ‘Tata Sons’.

1. Ms.PRATHIBHA PRAHLAD, a 54 years old ‘Indian ‘Bharat Natyam Dancer’ of Delhi, born in Karnataka has been selected for the ‘Padma Shri’ Award- 2016, under: Art- Classical Dance.
Ms.Prathibha is:
- The Head of the ‘Prasiddha Foundation’ which has produced many popular Dance Programs, such as ‘Vande Maatram’, ‘Sights & Sounds of India’ and the ‘Panchajanya’ and
- A Member of the Experts’ Committee, which has designed the ‘Opening & the Closing Ceremonies’ of the ‘Delhi Common Wealth Games-2010’.
